On Tuesday, March 17, all MCPS schools and buildings will be closed for students and 10-month staff - Code Orange. 11 and 12-month employees may report to work 2 hours late.

This decision was made based on additional reports of black ice, along with lingering low temperatures, and the potential for snow squalls today.

The safety of our students and staff is our top priority.

Dear MCPS Community,

Due to the current weather conditions and anticipated overnight below-freezing temperatures, on Tuesday, March 17, all MCPS schools and buildings will open two hours late for students and 10-month staff - Code Blue. All 11 and 12-month non-instructional staff may report to work one hour late.

Since temperatures are expected to be below freezing in the morning, a two-hour delay will help with melting and give our staff time to prepare parking lots and sidewalks.

We are making this decision now to allow families and staff to prepare for a two-hour delay.

Sincerely,

Kelly Guempel, Ed.D.

Our MCPS All-County Honors artists spent Saturday at Virginia Tech getting hands-on with history! Under the guidance of Professor Hiromi Okumura, students learned the ancient secret of making egg tempera paint from scratch.

From collaborative sketches to a stunning final installation, these high schoolers showed incredible talent and teamwork.

Although most roads are clear, the parking lots and sidewalks at many of our schools are icy, and we need to give our facilities team time to clear them for a safe arrival to school.

Dear MCPS Community,

To prepare our buildings for school on Monday, the MCPS custodians and facilities staff have worked Saturday and Sunday to clear drifting snow and ice from our sidewalks and parking lots. Tomorrow morning's forecast calls for temperatures in the low teens with even lower windchills, though temperatures are expected to rise throughout the day. To ensure the safest start to the school day, our teams will again be out early in the morning to treat any additional icing.

Due to the extreme cold temperatures forecasted for the overnight and morning hours, on Monday, Feb. 9, all MCPS schools and buildings will open two hours late for students and 10-month staff. All 11 and 12-month non-instructional employees may report to work one hour late. Code Blue.

Please be safe as you travel to school in the morning. We are excited to welcome students and staff back to school. I’d like to thank our custodians and facilities crews for their hard work over the last few weeks.

Thank you for your patience and understanding while we navigated the winter weather over the last two weeks.

Sincerely,

Kelly Guempel, Ed.D
