To prepare our buildings for school on Monday, the MCPS custodians and facilities staff have worked Saturday and Sunday to clear drifting snow and ice from our sidewalks and parking lots. Tomorrow morning's forecast calls for temperatures in the low teens with even lower windchills, though temperatures are expected to rise throughout the day. To ensure the safest start to the school day, our teams will again be out early in the morning to treat any additional icing.
Due to the extreme cold temperatures forecasted for the overnight and morning hours, on Monday, Feb. 9, all MCPS schools and buildings will open two hours late for students and 10-month staff. All 11 and 12-month non-instructional employees may report to work one hour late. Code Blue.
Please be safe as you travel to school in the morning. We are excited to welcome students and staff back to school. I’d like to thank our custodians and facilities crews for their hard work over the last few weeks.
Thank you for your patience and understanding while we navigated the winter weather over the last two weeks.
Sincerely,
Kelly Guempel, Ed.D
Superintendent

Due to the overnight forecast indicating an increased chance of hazardous weather at the peak of dismissal, on Friday, February 6, all MCPS schools and buildings will be closed to students and 10-month staff - Code Yellow Virtual Learning Day. 11 and 12-month non-instructional employees should report to work on time as safety permits.
For more detailed information on student assignments, attendance, and meal services, please visit: https://www.mcps.org/page/virtual-learning-hub
Meals will be available for pickup at Auburn High School, Christiansburg High School, Price’s Fork Elementary School, and Shawsville Middle School from 9-11 a.m. One day’s worth of meals will be provided. Parents and guardians may pick up meals for students, but they must be able to provide their student’s name, school, and, if possible, student number.
Students must complete attendance by 10 a.m. Elementary school parents and guardians may complete the virtual check-in for students. Middle and high school students must complete the form themselves. A link will be sent directly to middle and high school students.
Elementary school students should continue any remaining assignments or visit the Virtual Learning Hub on the MCPS website to find reading, writing, and math assignments for each grade level. Paper copies are available for pick up at each school.
Please stay safe over the weekend, and we look forward to our eventual return to the classroom soon.
Sincerely,
Kelly Guempel, Ed.D
Superintendent

On Friday, Feb. 6, all MCPS schools and buildings will open two hours late for students and 10-month staff. All 11 and 12-month non-instructional employees may report to work one hour late. Code Blue.
We are continuously monitoring overnight and morning weather and road conditions, as well as the forecast for the rest of the day. If necessary, we are prepared to pivot to a Code Yellow Virtual Learning Day.
These decisions are never easy, but safety is always our priority. We thank you for your patience and understanding during this extended closure.
Sincerely,
Kelly Guempel, Ed.D
Superintendent

Safety is paramount, and we cannot effectively and safely bring our students and staff to school today. We were prepared for virtual learning, but after last night’s weather, road conditions are too treacherous this morning to bring our staff to support meal distribution, assist with student check-in, and provide academic and technical support.

In the event that alterations to the two-hour delay schedule are needed, please be prepared for a Code Yellow Virtual Learning Day. If that happens, information regarding meals and assignments will be shared at that time.

Congratulations to our Seniors of the Month! These students were recognized at the Feb. 3, School Board meeting.
